On May 27, 2017 Coastal Angels took the "Farm to Table" Cookout Tour at Tanaka Farms in Irvine, CA. This tour lets guests pick vegetables from their farm and eat them in a picnic setting after washing and preparing them. Coastal Angels wants more people to experience the farm-fresh and delightful atmosphere Tanaka Farms has to offer.
The day started around 10:30 a.m. with a guided tour through one of the very few farms in Orange County. The tour guide Nikki took guests to five ready-to-plate vegetables: carrots, kale, swiss chard, bok choy, and Japanese turnips. All of the guests had to walk in the fields to pick their own vegetables, and in spots it was very muddy. Luckily, we wore boots. Nikki taught everyone how to properly pick the plants and suggested to only choose what you can eat. Afterwards, guests took their vegetables to the wash stand and then chopped them and added spices. The farm also provided a Strawberry Kale salad, grilled zucchini, and strawberries too. The cooks grilled each guests' vegetable boxes and some people also added BBQ Chicken thighs. We were also told that their selection changes week to week based on which plants are ready to be picked.
Coastal Angels hopes that more people become inspired to take a guided tour at Tanaka Farms in Orange County for a date, by yourself, or with friends or family. It's fun to learn about what certain vegetables look like and how to pick them in a proper way. Make those memories, and eat cleaner for a healthier future.
Tanaka Farms inspired us to grow vegetables in our backyard, embrace eating clean, and bring people together at the table. Having freshly picked vegetables reduces the amount of plastic and trash you would otherwise have to throw away. Vegetables are nature's gift to us and when it's fresh, it's not wrapped in plastic, which we find at our monthly beach cleanups.
